"By turns lyrical, impulsive, meditative and humourous,
the music of the Trio Résistances, led by drummer Bruno Tocanne
and featuring Lionel Martin on saxophones and Benoît Keller on
bass is full of wonderful surprises. Inspired as much by the
revolutionary messages of Martin Luther King and Salvador Allende, as
by free-thinkin musicians as Paul Motian and Charlie Haden, this trio
shares an uncompromising belief in self-expression and a elentless
pusuit of the path less travelled... For over 20 years, drummer Bruno
Tocanne has been a conduit for french jazz while gracing the bandstand
with international stars such as Paul Rogers, Jean Vanasse, Steva
Potts, Dave Burell... Fellow agitators Lionel Martin and Benoît
Keller have played in numerous festivals both at home and abroad,
including performances with Irakere musicians, Serge Lazarevitch,
Didier Havet or Louis Sclavis... All three are all members of imuZZic,
a collective uniting some of the most creative musicians of the French
jazz scene"

For the
past 20 years, musician, teacher and activist Bruno Tocanne
(drums) has been a catalyst for improvised music, bringing together
some of the most creative musicians on the French and international
scenes. Bruno's travels around the globe have resulted in musical
encounters with Dave Burell, Steve Potts, Yuri Kusnetsov, Didier
Lockwood, Louis Sclavis or Tom Walsh... In the mid-1980s he joined the
Orchestre Sympathique (from Montreal), playing alongside Jean Vanasse,
François Richard and Michel Saulnier and touring extensively in Canada
and Europe. In the 1990s, he began his association with pianist Sophia
Domancich, playing in her trio with bassist Paul Rogers, and he began a
residency in Lyon with clarinettist Catherine Delaunay in 1998,
beginning a series of collaborations that included tours to Japan andCanada. Noted in
particular for his work on soprano and baritone, saxophonist Lionel Martin
is a player constantly seeking out new challenges. For example, as a solo
player, Lionel incorporated electronic effects into a recent commission
inspired by the works of Jackson Pollock. As a member of the D'"Allègres
Barbares" trio with trombonist Patrick Charbonnier and drummer Eric Delbouys,
he reworked Bartók's 44 violin duos, weaving improvised elements
into the original composer's material. In addition to his work with Trio
Résistances, since 2001 Lionel has regularly performed and recorded
with the brass group "Y'en a qui manquent pas d'air" alongside Catherine
Delaunay, Didier Havet and Daniel Casimir. Born in
1974, Benoît Keller (double bass) quickly established himself as
one of the most versatile young bass players on the French jazz scene.
He began his music studies at the IMFP in Salon de Provence where he studied acoustic and electric
bass under Michel Zénino, André Franco, and Gildas Boclé.
Since 2001,
Bruno has continued his duo performances with Delaunay, formed the Trio Résistances
with Lionel Martin and Benoît Keller (3 albums), then formed in 2007/2008 the Tocanne- Martin - Gaudillat trio / "new dreams nOw !"
and the Nachoff - Tocanne Project / "5 new dreams" (both recorded
on Cristal Records label) ... He founded the ImuZZic improvisers
collective (imuZZic network) in partnership with Denis Badault (former
director of the National Jazz Orchestra), Alain Blesing, Hasse Poulsen,
John Greaves, Sophia Domancich... In addition to recording albums with
a number of groups, such as "Tocade(s)" with Catherine Delaunay,
"Résistances", "Global Songs" and "Etats d'urgence" with Trio
Résistances, "Coeur de Lune" in quartet with Daniel
Casimie... Bruno has played live improvised music to Dziga
Vertov's film "The Man with the Camera" and to video-musical creations
as "Round about 68" with Hasse Poulsen.
Playing
with the "Free Sons Sextet", he won first prize in Gexto Jazz Festival in
Spain, and he has performed in Cuba with the musicians of the legendary
Afro-Cuban/salsa band Irakere. His involvement with the ImuZZic network
has allowed him to work with Denis Badault, Régis Huby, Alain Blesing, John Greaves, Quinsin Nachoff, Sophia Domancich...
In
1996 he joined the jazz department of the Chalon/Saone Academy of
Music, where he furthered his studies with Michel Martin, Jean-Louis
Almosino, Pierre "Tiboum" Guignon and Yves Rousseau, winning a Gold
Medal for each discipline in 1998. He performed with a variety of
groups including, the "Slate trio" with Will Menter, the sextet "Octobre"
, some crations of the imuZZic network where he met Sophia Domancich
and John Greaves, and in duet with clarinet player Nicolas Fargeix. In
recent years Benoît has worked with many of France's most respected
jazz musicians, such as Louis Sclavis, Jean-Marc Padovani, Bertrand
Renaudin, Charles Loos, Jeff Sicard... In addition to composing for and
playing with Trio Résistances, he performs regularly with acclaimed
accordion player Jacky Lignon, Catherine Delaunay, Grégory Teyssier,
Serge Lazarevitch...
