resistances of the jazz.... admirable !
"There will be thus (in Montréal) resistance according to archie shepp and there will be also that of teh trio formed by bruno tocanne, lionel martin and benoit keller . This trio has just made a jewel baptized "résistances" .An album introduced and conclued by nothing less than an appropriation of "the song of teh partisans" (song of french anti-fascit resistance.ndlr) . Thes guys belong to this tendancy that louis sclavis , michel portal, henri texier... defend and protect. Wich one ? Implosion of what is musicaly flat. They are without compromise. They are not lymphatic members of a speech or of a method. Why ? Because with them, in their connection, they cultivate the requirement. Their music is not difficult, is not harassing. It sticks to present time.... It's also modern, in the aesthetic direstion, they don't reproduce "ad nauseum" the litany of the commonplaces. Their jazz is not a jazz of loan but a jazz wich is sought with constancy. In other words wich is admirable !" LE DEVOIR DE MONTREAL
a militancy with an elegant and refined savour
"After having occured with the "hors serie" 4tet then with the sophia domancich trio, the drummer bruno tocanne melts in the tread the "polysons" collective, then the bruno tocanne réunion, in whom will play a lot of musicians (paul rogers, laurent dehors, malo vallois, daniel casimir...) He will form then a duet with catherine delaunay and will meet her two current assistants, the saxophonist lionel martin and the double bass player benoît keller. "résistances" is their first work in trio. You do net let misuse by this title, it acts here of a militancy of a particular elegant and refined savour. To evoque resistances, the trio sails between meditation and suggestion, taking then forms of carefree flanery... More poetic than political, the music of the trio is an invitation to walk, even with vagrancy. Meditative or leaping tempos , the music moves wandering recalling us per moments. "the poetic resistance" of christophe marguet. All the ingredient are there to carry us..." JAZZMAN
an album wich you can realy listen without end
"The drummer bruno tocanne, resistant from a long date to the buiseness of culture, confirms today its resistance, or rather its resistances, in company of the saxophonist lionel martin and the double bass player benoît keller. Continuous breath of the saxophone, strident cries... supported or just presents drums, stuck with the rods or the hands, lyric or rythmic double bass... These three telented musicians engage their conviction and passion in an alive music without concession.... A very beautiful album wich is listened truly without end and awake our citizen conscience" JAZZBREAK
an authentic trio wich proves that jazz still exists !
"This album would prove that jazz still exists, if it's were usefull to ask such a question... Because it is the first feeling wich comes in listening this coherent trio, with the almost traditionnal formation double bass, drums and saxophones. No word is pronounced, no text to underline the matter citizen, even militant, stated in the plural title... On the contrary they approach by an astonishing absence of violence, unless it does not act a soft violence then, concerning that wich persists, wich penetrates in you... You can let yourselef carry by the fluidity of these melody lines wich comprise their batch of surprises, and at the same time you can observe the parity between the three instruments wich play without hierarchy in a rich conversation of limpid and complex declarations. This music is an honest assertion, without compromise compared to the majority current wich sweeps all in the current liberalism of "show buiseness". The melody song in victorious fate, while proposing solutions. The topics wich are connected harmonicaliousy without one being able to distinguish their author, underline the true team work and the discovery of an authentic trio. By its constant tension wich never goes to the exlosion, the breaks, the subversions of the codes and the rythms as in the free jazz... this music is dissenting today... bruno tocanne is the attentive drummer, of the trio, constantly on the alert, taking its whole special place supporting a dry clear case, and resounding in this intimate exchange, never in conflict with lionel martin, very promising saxophonist and benoît keller, double bass player author of subtle melodies. Let's listen to those wich quietly take care not to to be let divert, and wich never yield to the facility. Theses resistants make you circulate from one to end of the album a "revolutionary" breath. "tolerances" posts the philosophy of this album... When we said to you : that's true jazz !" CENTRAL JAZZ
a music with liberators accents...
"The dark beauty of the "song of the partisans" opens the album of the trio tocanne - martin - keller. There is a first obviousness with the listening of such a record, it's the "parti pris" of the musicians to play a music, jazz, wich most largely seek in our unconscious some references, to facilitate perhaps simply to evacuate its phantoms ... We can find the sonority of the lionel martin's saxophone rather near to coltrane on " sun ship, to further reminiscences wich could point out charlie haden's liberation music orchestra ... The rythm section is playing with all, rebounding with plume... There is a ball of contained energy in the music of these three one... for a music with lieberator accents " 491
