Plenty of space for the groove to breathe...

European jazz seems to be on a roll, with players like Peter Brotzmann and Han Bennink counted among the music's most revered figures, and Lisbon-based label Clean Feed emerging as this decade's Blue Note. Musos like Portuguese saxophonist Rodrigo Amado and Swiss trombonistSamuel Blaser even run their own labels. Now you can add French drummer Bruno Tocanne to the list. He's served as artistic director of the imuZZic collective for over a decade... On "4 New Dreams !", he leads a quartet where Blaser intertwines contrapuntal lines and swaps solos with trumpeter Remi Gaudillat. The leader never rushes the proceedings, always ensuring that there's plenty of space for the groove to breathe and the listener to cogitate. The music's mood is somber and reflective, and the performances are beautifully recorded, so that every intimate detail and nuance is clearly audible.

Artistic director of the imuZZic collective since 2000, Bruno Tocanne has always initiated a lot of projects like the Polysons collective with Jean Rémi Guédon,  the “Bruno Tocanne Reunion” with Sophia Domancich, then with Laurent Dehors and Philippe Sellam, the “Tocanne - Delaunay duet” (CD of emotion – Jazz Magazine), The Trio Resistances (3 albums - Cristal Records), the most of the creations of the imuZZic collective, or in late 2009, the big band Libre(s)ensemble... He has recorded and toured with Sophia Domancich's Trio ("Funerals" + Paul Rogers, featuring John Greaves) and has also performed with Denis Badault, Louis Sclavis, Hasse Poulsen, Jean-Philippe Viret, Laurent Cugny, Hugh Hooper, Dave Burrell, Russ Johnson, the I.Overdrive Trio.. Influenced by pop-rock movement at the end of the 70s, before turning to jazz and improvised musics, Bruno Tocanne  - "somewhere between Robert Wyatt and Paul Motian”  (Le Monde de la Musique) - is currently  working both on electric projetcts (A tribute to Std Barret with the I.Overdrive trio, the Libre Ensemble) and on "acoustic" projects like this serie of "new dreams" started in 2008 with the saxophonist Lionel Martin and the trumpet player Rémi Gaudillat ("new dreams nOw !") then in 2008 with a 5tet co-leaded by himself and the saxophoniste - clarinetist and composer Quinsin Nachoff, who is living in New York (Nachoff - Tocanne Project "5 new dreams" - Top Album of the year 2008 in Montreal Gazette), before touring in late 2009 in China, Hong Kong and Korea in 4tet with the new yorker double bassit Michael Bates ("new songs" tour). The "4 new dreams !" album was recorded in april 2010 with this same double bass player, and with the swiss trombonist Samuel Blaser (who recorded in december 2010 with Paul Motian and is actually playing in a 5tet with Marc Ducret), and the french trumpet player Rémi Gaudillat. Michael Bates, Rémi Gaudillat and Bruno Tocanne met them when they shared the stage in Lyon in 2008, the first with his own 4tet, the two others with the Nachoff -Tocanne project.  They did the first gig together when Samuel and Michael were on tour in Europa in 2009 and  all of them immediattly undrestood that there was a clear band chemistry.

Bruno Tocanne is also playing in duet with Samuel Blaser
